Social Studies
Instructor: Preolo
Welcome to Miss Preolo's Social Studies Experience
Together Everyone Achieves More!
genesis is not always a portrayal of your child's performance as so many factors are taken into account for a final marking period assessment

Genesis concerns for me and parents who are new to middle school .Quizzes are only a small part of who your child is in assessments. One poor grade does not mean they are a failure and one awesome grade may not reflect that they are doing well over all.
I ask that in any case you ask your child how they got to that point. It is about the learning process. AS I SAID AT BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - EVERYTHING COUNTS AND WHILE GRADES ARE AN INDICATOR OF THEIR FORMAL ASSESSMENTS - THEIR WHOLE PERFORMANCE AND WHO THEY ARE DEVELOPING IN REGARDS TO LIFELONG STUDENTSHIP SKILLS IS CRITICAL.
HW is such a small part of the marking period - if a child as you will read below does not complete an assignment that is for class discussion the following day - it can't be made up - they do not receive a 0 but a 65 - which i s more than they would have received if they did it the following night - it is a moot point after class discussion to ask them to finish it -

as you will also read below - it has always been my policy to work with every student in meeting their needs for hw assignments, tests, quizzes, etc.
Marking Period Progress

(Displays 11/14/2014)
I am writing this detailed explanation as many parents have had questions for the 1st marking period.
Be assured that if there are missing assignments - I remind those students daily - by recording in their planners - please check daily and I do i speak to them individually.

Your child at this point in the year can explain each and every entry in grade book as well as the contents of their notebook as an overall picture of what we do in social studies.

The parent portal should be used as a snapshot of your student’s academic progress.
- please do not be alarmed on HW assignments - some are a yes/ no indicating they did it and have extra time like signing first marking period letter.
others like preparing for a class discussion the next day are a pass/ daily - and a fail is not a zero but a 65 - those cannot be made up as they are critical to the lesson the following day and have very little impact on a child's marking period grade - other hw assignments are graded with an O- S - U 0- again
those number values can be found on genesis parent portal - those are assignments where simple questions need to be answered - O indicates child went above and beyond - S indicates they answered questions as asked with simple statements and a U indicates they didn't do it - again not a zero.

• Genesis is provided as one form of home/school communication.
• Student achievement cannot be accurately measured solely by numerical means. Many factors influence student grades: daily participation, effort, preparation, and performance.
•The final grade will be posted at the end of the marking period
Their binders can serve as a place to see what we do daily that is not a graded assessment but what leads to them. This marking period - the back of their notebook includes their Do Now's which have been changed to include so many content and skills in social studies. - It can serve as a conversation starter to discuss with your child what we are doing. These Do Now exercises have taught children mapping skills, how to use current events and apply it to personal or worldly situations, think critically and how to see how the strands of social studies are so finely interwoven.

The first marking period is an introductory unit on "What is Social Studies" and a unit in the 5 themes of Geography,They include: Location, where are you in the world, Place: describing the geography of a particular place and how that impacts the culture and economy of that place, Human Environment Interaction, Movement, the concept of how goods and ideas and cultures spread around the world, and finally regions, we will particular analyze how climate, history, geography and economy impacts the regions of the US which can then be applied to all future social studies classes.

It is important not to use genesis as a sole tool of evaluating your child's understanding as grades entered - especially right now are simply a snap shot of daily lessons.

If my website is not updated - go to Mr. Eliscu's website (6 Navy's learning specialist) and click on daily homework and the entire team's hw is listed by subject for the day (week)

genesis and the second marking period progress
The students and I have had a discussion on their first marking period progress and their grades. All students have done very well. I explained to them that their genesis is simply a snapshot at the time they look at it throughout the marking period. If a few hw assignments have been added and they have done well or poorly that does not indicate where they will stand in 10 weeks. It is an ongoing process of assessment. We have also talked about how the first marking period is a transition and that their efforts in the areas of participation and preparation will require more effort as the material becomes more challenging. They will be setting foals with you at the December parent studnet portfolio sharing in how they want to focus their efforts in areas of strengths and weaknesses. I always tell them they are a whole child in performance and while genesis does capture assessments in many areas of their performance it is not always a true indicator of how they perform on a dail basis adn to always keep that in mind as they strive to reach their potential each day.
